Award-winning edtech leader in immersive digital learning experiences to share best practices on strategies to increase student engagement and learning outcomes

BOSTON and ROCKVILLE, Md. — NOVEMBER 16, 2023 — Labster (www.labster.com), which offers the world's leading edtech platform for virtual lab simulations for science courses, is partnering with the nonprofit American Physiological Society (APS) (https://www.physiology.org). The two organizations share a deep commitment to promoting education that advances scientific discovery.

As a global multidisciplinary community of nearly 10,000 top biomedical scientists and educators, the APS’ mission since its founding in 1887 is to solve the major problems affecting life and health by fostering scientific research and dissemination of information in the physiological sciences.

“APS member-researchers are at the forefront of advancements in biomedical science,” said Julian Allen, PhD., Labster Vice President of Academic Affairs. “We’re excited at the opportunities this collaboration presents, and look forward to sharing best practices on leveraging technology-mediated learning tools for teaching today’s learners.”

“We welcome Labster to the APS community and anticipate spotlighting new learning opportunities for our members through Labster’s unique insights into the learning advantages offered by immersive edtech,” said APS Director of Learning and Career Development Margaret Stieben. “Forming partnerships with science education technology providers like Labster has been key to providing our community of physiology educators with professional development tools on cutting-edge platforms that enhance the student learning experience.”

Labster will co-host a webinar with APS on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, in which anatomy and physiology (A&P) instructor Christina Alevras, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Saint Joseph, will share her recent research on strategies to increase student engagement — and student success — in the undergraduate classroom. Not only do today’s students come from more diverse learning backgrounds, but as digital natives, they generally have shorter attention spans and are comfortable with tech-enabled learning.

Labster empowers forward-thinking faculty at higher education institutions and high schools around the world to integrate interactive science lab simulations into their science curricula, transforming learning outcomes for their students. These immersive digital learning experiences deliver a learning advantage to students, setting them on the path to becoming the next generation of leading scientists.

With Labster, students explore state-of-the-art laboratories from their internet browsers on desktop, laptop, and tablet computers (such as Chromebooks and iPads). The Labster catalog of 300-plus STEM curriculum-aligned virtual lab simulations in fields such as biology, biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology, chemistry, and physics use gamification techniques demonstrated to boost student enthusiasm and engagement as well as learning outcomes.

A 2023 study led by Dr. Rachel Schechter of LXD Research (with Northwestern and Tufts University researchers) found Labster use increased the overall intention of students at a large university to enroll in future STEM courses and to identify a future career in a STEM field.
